A vast range of treatment modalities are present for wrinkles appearing on the skin due to number of factors causing them. They range from use of anti wrinkles cream to laser surgery for the removal of wrinkles. However, it is believed that laser surgery actually plays role in decreasing the appearance of most of the wrinkles. It is not much effective in completely removing the wrinkles from the face.

Risk benefit ratio of the laser surgery usually determines whether it should be opted or not. Till now this ratio is balanced and thus laser surgery is not much commonly used across the world.

Cosmetic or plastic surgeons encase the domain of laser surgery for wrinkle treatment. Laser surgery has many benefits over traditional chemical peels or dermabrasion used for treatment of wrinkles on the face and above the lips. However it comes with few limitations which are:

  • Elimination of deep wrinkles is not possible
  • Excessive skin which is sagged cannot be removed by this technique

Now the question arises of the safety of laser surgery, which can be answered by considering different types of laser surgeries available. These types depend on the agent used in laser surgery. These are:

  • Cardondioxide
  • Erbium
  • N- lite

All have their merits and demerits but CO2 is the most commonly laser surfacing agent used these days. This laser surgery technique with carbondioxide is done in doctor’s office. It has few side effects which are given below:

  • First seven to ten days the skin is swollen and remains red. It may also burn or weep in the first few days.
  • Skin may remain pinkish in color during first 10 to 12 weeks of surgery and thus needs to be covered with makeup.
  • Brown discoloration of the skin is another common side effect of laser surgery. It is usually not permanent but temporary. However, in some cases it may remain there for life. In order to avoid it sunscreen are to be worn religiously while going in sunlight.

Laser surgery should be avoided in following conditions:

  • Previous allergy to any laser surgery
  • recent exposure to radiations for cancer therapy.
  • If you have sun allergy then it should be carried out cautiously.
  • Facial warts or herpes simplex.
  • If you are pregnant or breast feeding then it should be delayed for at least that much time.
